Positivity is a Mindset: I can and so can You

As Chance the Rapper sings, “Blessings keep falling in my lap.” In my early hours of waking today, I did a large starfish stretch and my laptop that I placed on my bed to watch some flicks last evening (but didn’t) went careening off my bed onto the wood floors. Although my eyes were closed, by mind cringed at the sound, ‘that one is going to hurt.’ And then I changed the thought, ‘I guess I will be looking forward to a new computer soon.’

Positivity is choice.

Pain is inevitable, but suffering is an option we chose if we engage in mental anguish. I am typing with the laptop currently, however I can see several robot parts that were previously hidden. The fulcrum action of opening and closing the laptop seems to have been affected.  However, all is fine because here I am typing.

I could have let this day be done because of this accident, instead I took that moment of insecurity ‘what will I do?’ frustration, ‘how could I have done that?’ and overall anxiety ‘this is the last thing I need right now!!’ and turned it into ‘I look forward to a new laptop very soon.

My current finances would not agree with this last statement. However, I did not say I would receive a laptop today or tomorrow. Soon is quite nebulous. I have had this laptop for only 3 years, so a soon in a lifetime of a laptop could be within 6 months or even more.

My point is I did not turn my frustration and moment of high high annoyance un-authentically positive. I thought, ‘yes, this is what it is. Why not look at the silver lining.’ I can no longer waste my time and energy on matters I cannot change. I damaged my laptop for a good ol’ morning stretch. It is done. I am going to have a superb day. Because although something a bit not-great happened, I am great.

In my past, I have had an inclination to uses my actions (or lack there of) to define my self-worth. This is called self-esteem. Issues arose. When I failed a test, my self-esteem plummeted. Ended a significant relationship, experienced road rage in northeast LA, endured bulling by peers – all these external things were defining how great I felt internally. Who are these experiences to dictate my worth?! Self-efficacy is having resiliency that even when things are not-so-bueno, I understand I am of high worth. Noble caliber because I love myself regardless of my flaws. I love myself, even though I broke my laptop this morning.

Affirmation: I am whole and complete on my own. I enrich the world with my presence. When I fail, I love myself more. I give the unconditional love to the world I am meant to receive. Love is my birthright.

  1. I love this attitude! Excellent way to start the day!

And you know what? A good ol’ morning stretch is worth it! Body, health, and happiness comes first. Computers can be replaced or substituted. (It wouldn’t be as fast or convenient, but you could write from your phone, go to the public library, or truly go old school and use pen and paper. A broken laptop can’t stop you from reaching your dreams and goals.) 🙂 ❤
